On the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea, Estonia is bordered by the Gulf of Finland in the north, Russia in the east, and Latvia to the south.

State order: Parliamentary republic.

Area: 45 227 square kilometres (17 500 square miles).

Geographical latitude: Between 57.31' and 59.49' N.

Geographical longitude: Between 21.46' and 28.13' E.

Population: 1 500 000 inhabitants. 61% Estonians, 30% Russians and 9% others..

Population density: 35 people per square kilometre. Over 70 % resides in urban centres..

Capital: Tallinn (442 000 inhabitants)..

Major towns: Tartu (109 100), Narva (80 300), Kohtla-Järve (70 800), Pärnu (52 000)..

Administrative divisions: 15 counties (maakond), divided further into local government areas (vald)..

Official language: Estonian. Russian is widely spoken. Many Estonians speak English, German, Finnish and Swedish..

Religion: Predominantly Protestant (Lutheran). There is also a Russian Orthodox minority..

Currency: Estonian Kroon, divided into 100 cents (sent); EEK (8 EEK = 1 DEM)..

Driving: Right side of the road. Speed in town 50 km/h, out of town 90 km/h. International licence required..
